...Well technically it was because of low blood sugar
Where to start...
So, this week has been intense. It's midterm time and it has been one test after another, one quiz after another, and one paper after another. I have had to just take it one day at a time because I've been so overwhelmed.
Here is where it gets complicated, try to keep up:
- I don't have my sports conditioning class on Friday because my teacher will be down in St. George working at the Huntsman Sr. Games.
- However, even though it's not our fault we don't have class, we have to make it up by going to a cross fit class at a local gym
-The only time I could go to the cross fit class was today at noon. This is because tomorrow I have to go work at the Huntsman Sr. Games to fulfill an assignment for my Exercise Testing class, taught by the same teacher.
-Today in my Exercise Testing class we had a midterm from 10-11:30. So my plan was to take my midterm, go eat lunch to have energy for cross fit, and make it to cross fit by noon. HOWEVER, we also had a lab due in Exercise Testing, which I forgot.
So I ask my teacher if I can give the lab to her today by 4 and she says, "No I need it by noon, after you finish your midterm you better run home and get it." To which I respond, "I'm supposed to go to cross fit at noon and I don't know if I'll make it." and she says, "Go to a different cross fit then."
Well at this point I can tell she is set on being difficult and I'm wasting my midterm test taking time so I just say OK. So I finish my midterm at 11:23 and I run and get my lab done and turn it in to her at 11:45. Then I get in my car and speed across town and realize I haven't eaten since 8:00 when I had a banana and a protein shake.
So I stop at the gas station and grab a clif bar because I knew I was going to need something quick that was high in calories and carbs if I was gonna make it through this work out. IT WAS NOT ENOUGH.
I get to the cross fit gym at 12:01 and he makes us run 400 M, row 400 M and do squats and push-ups for a warm up. Then he makes us do front squats with 20 lb. weights on the bar. Then for the work out he makes us do 21 dead lifts followed by 21 push-ups, then 15 dead lifts followed by 15 push-ups, and finally 9 dead lifts followed by 9 push-ups.
If you have made it this far in the story I applaud you. I just need to vent and get this in writing so I can remember the time that exercise almost took my life. Back to the story...
At this point I stand up and go to the bathroom and am EXTREMELY light headed. I decide that I don't want to pass out and crack my head open on the tile so I sit down. I come out of the bathroom and Abby (my classmate and friend) says, "Sydney are you OK?" and then runs over to me, grabs me, and shoves me into a seat saying, "You look like you need to sit down, Oh no, YOU NEED TO SIT DOWN." Apparently my face was blue and it was really freaking her out.
Suddenly, my vision is gone and my ears are plugged and I feel so sleepy I honestly could have fallen asleep standing up. This is in addition to still feeling light headed, like I'm going to puke and like I'm going to break down in tears. And I can't. Stop. Yawning.
Everyone was making a fuss over me and, it's kinda fuzzy in my memory, but they just kept asking me questions and I was really annoyed and kept glaring at them. Ha. I tried to find my pulse and I couldn't find it in my wrist, neither could the trainer. We did, however, find it in my neck.
They wouldn't let me drive home so I tried calling Ben, but he was in class and didn't answer. They determined that my blood sugar must be REALLY low because I'd had so little to eat and we were working out anaerobically (when you work out anaerobically the ONLY substrate your body can use for energy is carbohydrate, it can't burn fat or protein).
So once I got my vision back and stopped feeling like I was going to pass out, Abby drove me to her house and gave me some gatorade and a piece of bread. Thanks Abby :).
I feel bad for the trainer because I think that he thought I was going to tell everyone what happened and that he would lose business. At one point I said, "That's not fun, I don't know why people do that." Abby said he looked really butt hurt, haha. But it's not his fault, it's mine. And my stupid teacher's since she wouldn't let me turn my lab in later.
Now that I think about it, I realize how dangerous all of that was. I'm so glad they didn't let me drive home because if I hadn't gotten some food in me, I probably would've started having seizures from low blood sugar.
So the moral of the story is that you need to be properly fed and hydrated before a workout.
Again, if you made it through this, I applaud you.
