So the other day Ben and I were watching this thing on a food channel and they were talking about the "slow food movement." It is this organization that is trying to combat fast food and all of the issues that are brought along because of it.
It all started with this man in Italy who took a bowl of spaghetti into a food court in the 80's and said that fast food was the end of culture. Which really if you think about it is very true. Food pretty much has everything to do with culture and if people aren't sitting down to a dinner table eating their cultural food then culture will no longer exist.
Anyway, we looked it up on facebook and joined the group because we thought it was such an awesome thing. On the facebook page people were recommending that everyone watch a documentary called Food Inc. So yesterday for FHE Ben and I watched it and it was crazy! I mean I am a health nut to begin with but this just made me even more strict ha.
It really changes your thinkin on like wal-mart and costco. Now I have resolved to buy organic and from farmer's markets. I would love it if we lived in a city where there were farmers' markets a lot but Cedar really doesn't have them.
It's just crazy because it turns out the whole reason E. Coli is around is because people started feeding cattle corn instead of grass because it was cheaper and fattened them up quicker. It also made large poops that don't really dissolve quickly so manuer gets all over the cows and into our food.
So instead of switching back to grass, companies have tried to kill E. Coli by washing our meat in ammonia. Yes ammonia the household cleaning product that is also in hair dye. I don't care what anyone says that will cause cancer.
So Ben and I are both obsessed with buying organic and grass fed meat now. Not that we eat beef a lot anyway to be honest. Its going to cost us more money but I really believe it'll save us money in the long run because we wont have the healthcare problems that others do. It will also just promote an overall healthy lifestyle.
Yes I know I sound like a hippie... maybe I am.
Love Love Love
P.s. Do you like my lame attempt of trying to make my blog more interesting with pictures? Haha pretty sad I know...
